This is the maquette I made as Character Design exercise. I really appreciate the result, so I would to post the entire process of creation for the Mandragora Carnivorus.
In the first place, I needed to create a story for the character. Gremlis, The creatures from the movie, ispired me, and I wanted to create the same feeling for my character. The story is setted in a small village in italian Countryside, and talks about Gianny and the invasion of the Mandragora Carnivorus.
I did some research about the true legends about Mandragora, and i found a lot of sexual symbolism beyond.
In the past, mandrake was often made into amulets which were believed to bring good fortune, cure sterility, etc. Therefore, in the past, people have tied the roots to the bodies of animals and then used these animals to pull the roots from the soil.
Et voilà! This is the final maquette and the Overpaint!
